CSC and CEL announce new collaboration for compressed air energy storage

By: Cheesecake Energy

NOTTINGHAM, U.K. - April 15, 2024 - PRLog -- Chesterfield Special Cylinders (CSC), a leading designer and manufacturer of safety-critical pressure containment systems, and Cheesecake Energy (CEL), a developer of sustainable energy storage solutions, are pleased to announce their collaboration to deliver a series of pilot thermal and compressed air energy storage systems in Colchester, UK.

In March 2023, CEL was awarded £9.4m of funding from the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero for the Colchester pilot project through the UK's Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP). Funding was awarded under the Longer Duration Energy Storage competition as part of a commitment under NZIP to accelerate the commercialisation of innovative low-carbon technologies and set the UK on the path to net zero.

Utilising high-pressure cylinder packages supplied by CSC, CEL will install innovative energy storage systems in a new mixed-use development.  The CEL systems will store surplus energy generated by an 8MW solar power plant, which can then be used when demand is high, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and the grid, and lowering carbon emissions.

The high-pressure cylinders are made from recycled steel and have a proven long life. CSC and CEL have agreed to work together to further reduce cost and carbon footprint through optimising design and use of materials, exploring new innovations in corrosion protection and investigating how a circular supply chain for incorporating second use cylinders in CEL systems might be established.

CEL's energy storage systems are made from readily available materials produced by supply chains that already exist in the UK and internationally. They are flexible, scalable, and easy to install, making them accessible to a wide range of customers. The systems can be configured to deliver the specific combination of power and storage duration that best meets customers' needs, providing reliable and affordable energy storage.

Paul Harris, CEO of CEL said: "Energy storage will play a critical role in the energy transition and in meeting Net Zero targets in the UK and worldwide. We are excited to be working with Chesterfield Special Cylinders, an established and highly experienced UK supplier, on this pilot project.  With funding from the UK government, this pilot will help CEL to establish a supplier and partner network that will help accelerate progress towards our vision of becoming the leading global provider of sustainable energy storage."

Chris Walters, CEO of Chesterfield Special Cylinders said: "We are delighted to collaborate with Cheesecake Energy on their pilot UK project, contributing our knowledge and experience in the design and manufacture of safety-critical pressure containment systems to the delivery of a scalable, cost-effective green energy storage solution."
