LOS ANGELES - April 19, 2024 - PRLog -- Pioneer sitcom screenwriter Patricia C. ("Patt") Shea, whose career spans the golden age of network television sitcoms and dramas of the late 1970's to the 1990's, including All in the Family, Archie Bunker's Place, Gloria, The Jeffersons, Happy Days, Sanford, Cagney & Lacey, Lou Grant, In The Heat of The Night, Valerie, Baghdad Café and The Golden Girls, passed away April 12th (her 93rd birthday) at her home in Sherman Oaks, CA surrounded by her three children.

She is predeceased by her husband John ("Jack") Shea, former 2-time president of the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and veteran sitcom director of many classic comedies of the 1970's and 1980's, and her daughters Shawn and Elizabeth.

Shea's writing for legendary television icons Carroll O'Connor and Jean Stapleton for All in the Family and its spinoff, Archie Bunker's Place brought  Shea her greatest industry success. Her "Edith-centered" episodes in All in the Family brought her much notoriety and critical acclaim, including the "Too-Good Edith" episode, (the 203rd and final episode of All in the Family). Shea served as a staff writer for Archie Bunker's Place, from 1979-1982.

Shea was a three-time Humanitas Prize-nominee for her writing for these episodes.

As Shea reflected recently to family members, "Carroll and Jean were instrumental in my career. Jean wanted a woman's voice on All in The Family. Jean was a remarkable woman, always treating everyone their same, no matter their rank, title or star power. I was thrilled to be invited to work with both on their subsequent television projects."

Shea co-created the Sally Struthers' All in The Family spinoff Gloria, for which she wrote the pilot and was a producer of.

Following their stint on Archie Bunker's Place, the Shea and her writing partner Harriet Weiss wrote for Cagney & Lacey, Mama Malone, Valerie, Together We Stand, The Golden Girls and I Married Dora.

A lifelong Catholic, Shea, together with her husband Jack Shea, were co-founders of Catholics In Media Associates (CIMA) in 1992, together with other prominent Catholic entertainment industry professionals.

Her survivors include her three children: Bill, Michael and J.J.; and six grandchildren: Amanda, Michael, Dylan, Hudson, Katherine and Jackson.

Funeral Arrangements:
A Catholic Mass for family, friends and professional acquaintances will be held on Saturday, April 20th at 1:00 PM at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church, 13360 Valleyheart Drive, Sherman Oaks, CA 91423.
