ST. PAUL, Minn. - April 24, 2024 - PRLog -- The 9th Annual Literacy Rally was recently held in Minnesota. The special guest speaker for the event was Dr. Artika A. Tyner, founder of Planting People Growing Justiceā„¢ Leadership Institute (PPGJLI). The non-profit organization is dedicated to increasing literacy rates and inspiring the leaders of the future.

"I was honored to speak at the 9th Annual Rally for Minnesota Literacy Day. I shared strategies for promoting literacy and building intergenerational reading circles" said Tyner.

Literacy Day focuses on the science of reading and advocating for best practices to ensure every student can unlock the power of literacy. They're goals that PPGJLI supports through multiple programs. Literacy is essential for individuals to achieve their full potential. Children who can read earn more during their lifetime and are less likely to be incarcerated

Studies have revealed the science of literacy for any child relies on a five-pronged approach that includes: phonemics awareness (understanding language structure), phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. It's a concept that's often misunderstood by parents and even education professionals. Being able to read opens up new career paths and opportunities.

"As Malcolm X wisely said, 'Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.' For too many children who look like me, their passports have been revoked," said Tyner.

One in 4 children are unable to read. A child who isn't reading at grade level by 4th grade is four times more likely to drop out of school and over three times more likely to be arrested in their lifetime.

"It's time to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline and create new pathways to success," said Tyner. "Today marks the beginning of a new era. We're investing in our children's future by ensuring they have the right to read and the right to lead," said Tyner.

It's essential that the resources needed be provided for young scholars to master the foundation of learning. By taking action today, we will build a brighter tomorrow. Learn more: http://www.ppgjli.org
