Walking in Ladakh: 11 Nights from £3045 per person

The private tour is accompanied by an experienced guide. and combines day hikes of between easy and moderate difficulty levels in the lower Indus Valley, with treks through the alluring moonscape in the vicinity of Lamayuru.

Accommodation throughout is in simple, yet comfortable mountain lodges, with ensuite bathrooms, proper beds and running hot-water.

The core part of the Walking in Ladakh itinerary is an adaptation of the classic Likir to Temisgam trek, and features a 4-day hike through the fertile, isolated villages that dot the glorious Sham Valley.

Each treks combines 4 to 5 hours walking, with short transfers between your lodge and the trailhead.  En route, you will be able to gain an insight into the everyday life of Ladakhis, as well as enjoying Ladakh's breathtaking landscape of snow-capped mountains, barren hillsides and oasis-like green valleys.

The private tour begins with a night in Delhi, after which a scenic flight is taken to Leh, where the holiday continues with 3 nights in the village of Nimmu.  This provides a chance to acclimatise to Ladakh's high altitude, with introductory walks to the 16th century Basgo Fort, as well as the pretty Phyang village that takes you through terraced fields of barley, wheat, and corn.

Next, take a drive to the picturesque Likir village, and visit the sacred monastery, before setting off on an inspiring trek across Sham Valley.  Over the next 4 days, discover Lamayuru's arid moonscape, walk up the spectacular Ulleh Tokpo gorge to the 19th century Rizdong monastery, which is affectionately called 'the paradise for meditation.'

Soak up the spectacular views of the Indus Valley, whilst crossing the Mebtak La pass (3,750 m) to the village of Ang, and hike across fruit orchards and barley fields to the prosperous village of Temisgam (3,200m) – the 15th century capital of Ladakh.

Along the way, enjoy picnic lunches by the Indus River, visit local schools, monasteries, and markets, and interact with monks and villagers to gain an in-depth understanding of their way of life.  The holiday concludes back in the village of Stok near Leh, with 2 nights in a traditional village house, and a morning's trek to the village of Changma.
