Nov. 18, 2007 - PRLog -- IceNews reports that clinical trials have identified an active ingredient in Sambucol elderberry extract that is proven to support the immune system and fight the flu virus.

Black elderberry has been used as a natural remedy for common ailments such as coughs and colds for centuries but recent research has pinpointed an active element called Antivirin which combats the flu virus. Antivirin is found in proteins of the black elderberry and disarms the flu virus by preventing it from invading healthy cells’ membranes.

Researchers formulated an elderberry extract which was tested against eight different strains of the flu virus (both Type A and Type B) in the lab and found to be effective against all of them.

Clinical trials on patients displaying full-blown flu symptoms took place in Israel in the middle of a flu epidemic in 1992-93. Half were given the Sambucol black elderberry extract and half a placebo. Within 48 hours 75% of patients who had been given Sambucol had clearly improved and within 72 hours 90% were symptom-free. Only 16% of patients on placebos had shown any improvement after two days, and the rest took at least six days to recover.

In the same article IceNews also reports that test tube research has shown that Sambucol elderberry extract reduces the viral load on the Herpes simplex, HIV and Bird Flu virus.
