"Be aware of shipping deadlines--and the clock is ticking--to be sure your presents arrive on time," he suggests, and to control costs, ship early to avoid higher priced rapid shipping at the last minute.

"And to reduce stress when traveling this holiday season, especially by air, we recommend shipping your presents to your destination ahead of time instead of packing them into your luggage. We can even ship your luggage to your destination before you leave to further reduce potential airport and airline hassles. The last thing you want to do is to delay the airport security lines by opening gift packages for inspection, see them slide off the X-ray conveyor belt, or jammed into overhead storage on your plane. For those packing gifts themselves for shipping, be sure to use sturdy boxes and sealing tape intended for shipping, he advises. Don't use string to tie up boxes. Also, place inside each box the names and addresses of both the recipient and the sender—as well as on the outside.

The US Postal Service suggests sending express mail by December 22nd. United Parcel Service (UPS) says it will take Next Day Air packages as late as December 21st for delivery on Monday, December 24th. DHL's new ShipReady Box (11"x 8.5"x 5.5" size), available at Neighborhood Parcel provides second-day delivery service, with no weight restrictions, to and from anywhere in the 48 contiguous states. FedEx Ground says ship no later than December 17th, or by December 22nd by FedEx Express for packages to arrive in time for Christmas.

"Remember that bad weather can disrupt holiday package deliveries, and the volume builds the closer to Christmas, so don't wait until the last minute" warned Mr. Bechat

The peak of the holiday period for FedEx is December 17th, when it will handle 11.7 million pickups and deliveries. On December 21st UPS will handle its largest volume of air express packages, delivering 5.6 million air packages, according to the company.
