What the Press Has To Say About MISS DERRINGER:

"... with the poise of a theater diva, the presence of a method actress, and the voice of a vamp surfer girl, she projects real romantic confusion and heartbreak with every bittersweet syllable and every black tear." - Pitchfork

"In Miss Derringer's world, the Shangri-Las drink straight bourbon and sing along to the jukebox in an outlaw country bar while dire deeds go down in the moonlit parking lot... Murder can be the cutest little thing." -Music Matters

"Miss Derringer gives us a healthy way to shrug off big, dark conclusions about life: Have a sing-along about them. The demons of blues and country haunt both McGrath’s voice and the band’s songs, with each track leaving behind the smoky diesel trail of Bonnie and Clyde. Put these tracks on shuffle with Johnny Cash or Patsy Cline.” - Venus Magazine

" Phil Spector, Patsy Cline, murder ballads, Lee Hazlewood, and Nancy Sinatra duets and — above all — drinking are still some of Miss Derringer's favorite things." - All Music Guide

Los Angeles-born artist Liz McGrath has always had an eye for the strange beauty in the grotesqueries of life. From the Goth/Country/Shangry La girlgroup stylings of her band, Miss Derringer, to her sinisterly beautiful artwork that she creates, Liz has built a formidable body of work that compelled LA Weekly and Music Matters Magazine to put her on their Fall covers. Her live installation, The Incurable Disorder will debut at Billy Shire Fine Arts (5790 Washington Blvd, Culver City, CA 90232) on Saturday, December 15, 2007 and will run until January 5, 2008.

On the music side, Miss Derringer's recently released EP, "Black Tears" has been generating lots of acclaim and underground buzz. The public premiere of the video for the title track will be debuted in breath-taking 3-D at the opening reception of The Incurable Disorder, marking one of the first commercial uses of 3D in a music clip ever. The band's reverb laden music is also custom-made for exotic imagery, with lyrical turns dealing with many of the staples of country music (alcohol, prison, God, death, murder) coming head to head with pop-centric melodies (think Spector meets Morricone). In addition, the song will be featured on an episode of the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother that will broadcast on Monday, December 10, 2007 at 8pm ET/PT (check local listings).

Inspired by the relationship between the natural world and the detritus of consumer culture, Liz as artist brings forth a new cavalcade of creatures from the darker corners of the streets, the city, the imagination. 'Deerhouse' is a delicate, upholstery-covered deer who carries a furnished Victorian Painted Lady on its back, complete with fine china. 'The Buffalo' is a life-sized burlap-covered buffalo head balancing a luxury liner cruise ship. It is this melancholy interaction between man-made status symbols and suffering specimens of nature that make up the Incurable Disorder. A live installation piece, “Sinister Christmas” comes complete with head-banging reindeer, a nocturnal take on Mr. Claus in all his nightmarish glory, as well his naughty little helpers with their poisoned candy cane kisses. Drenched in black velvety dreamscapes and dripping rhinestone razorblades, Mcgrath’s Christmas makes it clear why your parents made you stay in bed when Santa was around.

Headed by the husband and wife team of musicians-turned-artists, McGrath and Morgan Slade (guitarist/songwriter), Miss Derringer welds surf, garage, Shangri La-styled girlpop, and punk into a veritable mixture that manifests itself expertly on the two-track EP, "Black Tears". Like a red '57 Chevy with white walls and fins souped up by the guys on American Chopper, "Black Tears" revs up a modern yet authentic surfy sound that begs for drag races on the beach. "I'm inspired by a lot of old American rock and pop, particularly the Shangri Las and Ronnettes," explains Morgan. "We also really were inspired by playing with Blondie [who they opened for on New Years 2007], and seeing how they use old rock as a foundation."

Produced by John Kastner (Doughboys), the "Black Tears" EP follows a very illustrious and incredibly well-received pair of albums which compelled Pitchfork to exclaim, "L.A.-based Miss Derringer are itching for a knife-fight with Dresden Dolls and the Raveonettes, and damned if it doesn’t sound like the band could take their turf.... Liz McGrath comes on like a new wave Weimar cowgirl, swirling a martini of cabaret, pop, rockabilly, and country with her manicured pinkie." Blondiie drummer Clem Burke played drums on Lullabies and remains a part-time member of the band.

As for what's in store for the band, Morgan replies: "We are writing a new record called Winter Hill, loosely based on the Winter Hill Irish mob war that happened in Boston in the early 1960s. Basically, a soundtrack for an early 1960s mob war... Early girl group and American blues/folk influences with a lot of drama."
