Follow on Google News | Broadband Genie Reports on ISP Q4 announcementsThis week saw the release of several Q4 announcements from BT, BskyB and Orange
By: Genie Ventures Ltd Whilst there are results still to be released from Virgin and Tiscali, the new figures are revealing enough to give an idea of the developments and trends in the broadband industry over the last quarter. BT announced that it retained its title of the “UK’s biggest broadband supplier” after collecting the largest amount of new connections at the end of 2007. By the end of 31st December 2007, they reported a 35% share of all new broadband subscribers, taking their total up 177,000 to 4.25 million and earnings up to £1.46 billion, firmly overtaking its main rival, Virgin Media. BskyB released its half yearly report showing that the number of its broadband subscribers up until 31st December 2007 had grown by 28% (260,000) leaving the subscription total tally up to around 1,199,000. Sky Broadband has now become the UK’s fastest growing broadband provider. A summary of the results showed that 47% of customers chose to bundle their products with at least one other Sky product – a clear indication that offers and advertising proved successful with an approximate 17% increase from this time last year. Orange has released its third quarter results with stats showing fairly disappointing results. In what it called a “most broadband increase” the company reported an addition of 75,000 subscribers, however, reports also showed that they lost 4,000 customers between October and December. The total tally of Orange subscribers now stands at 1,138,000. Speaking on the Q4 results announced so far Ciaron Dunne from Broadband Genie said: “Although two major players, Virgin Media and Tiscali still have to announce their latest figures, the reports released so far have been incredibly revealing. Bundled services seem to be doing wonders for subscriber figures,” he continued: “What this might suggest however, is that if trends continue the way they are, companies who are unable to offer attractive bundles and other innovative services may not stand a chance against the larger, more established, and wealthier ISPs.” Notes to editors Broadband Genie allows users to compare broadband online, and is part of Genie Group.
