By: Genevieve M. Blaber, The CollegeBound Network Although it's not always easy to find a college or university that offers an audio production program or a concentration in entertainment business, there are specialized schools out there; places like the Institute of Production and Recording (IPR) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Founded just six years ago, the Institute of Production and Recording is a top-of-the-line facility that occupies 48,000 square feet of studio and classroom space. As nine real-world studios give students the chance to practice their skills in an environment that's more akin to the working world than a traditional classroom, up-to-date technologies prepare them with knowledge and ability to land the media arts career they dream of. In fact, students of the Institute of Production and Recording have the opportunity to begin work on their portfolios and careers whenever it's best for them, thanks to the 24/7 availability of many of the studios. Of course, studios and soundboards mean nothing if there's no one to show you how it's done. The Institute of Production and Recording currently employs 50 instructors -- nine of whom have a combined total of 200 Platinum, Gold, and Grammy-winning records -- who teach courses on topics like digital cinema production, record label administration, artist management, web development, and indie journalism. Depending on their area of interest, students may earn either an Associate in Applied Science Degree, or a certification in Digidesign or Apple Logic Pro. The associate degree is available for the music and entertainment business program as well as the audio production and engineering program. While the latter course concentration will prepare students for careers as producer-engineers, mixing audio and creating new sounds, the former will introduce students to the business side of the music and entertainment industry and cover areas like marketing, managing tours, promotional writing, contract law, and networking. No matter which associate degree program you choose, you'll be required to complete 30 credits in the liberal arts in addition to your required 39 core credits, and 29 elective credits. Already have some credits earned from another school? Thanks to the Institute of Production and Recording's membership in the Globe Education Network (otherwise know as The Network), students may apply past credits received at a school within The Network towards earning a degree at another member institution.
