By: PRStreet, Inc. Yarns, a second year medical student, spent time at The Adolescent Care Unit at Fort Defiance Indian Hospital in Northeastern Arizona. The facility is the only long-stay, inpatient adolescent psychiatry unit in the Indian Health Service and is located eight miles north of Window Rock, AZ, the capitol of the Navajo Nation. King, also a second year medical student, served with the Global Health Outreach organization for eight days in Condega, Nicaragua. The team King served along side of opened a clinic from 9am-5pm Monday-Friday and treated around 400 patients each day. The Summer Enrichment Program is part of the Brody Medical Scholarship which allows students to apply for additional funding for a learning experience based on their personal interests. Students are encouraged to design a project that includes medicine and service and allows for a learning experience outside the classroom. About The Brody Medical Scholarship The Brody Medical Scholarship was established in 1983 by the family of J.S “Sammy” Brody. As part of the family’s long-standing commitment to the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University (ECU), the Brody Medical Scholarship has become North Carolina’s most distinguished medical scholarship. The scholarship provides full tuition and fees to incoming medical students who show high scholarship ability, with strong evidence of leadership, service, moral character, and a promise of distinction in medicine. The program shares the goals of the medical school to improve the health and quality of life for people in eastern North Carolina.
