It happens in old age. Macula is the most sensitive area of the eyes. It is fed by tiny blood vessels from the central artery. During old age, the musculature of the tiny blood vessels becomes obliterated and the degenerative process starts leading to dimness of vision. Some chemicals present in the cigarette like tar, nicotine etc. Get deposited in those tiny blood vessels. With time, the blood vessels are blocked by those chemicals.
