PBS Hawaii Selects Apace vStor as Part of Post Facility Upgrade

TV Pro Gear to Upgrade PBS Hawaii's Post Facility with a collaborative workflow built around the Apace vStor.

Nov. 13, 2008 - PRLog -- PBS Hawaii recently chose an Apace vStor High-Performance NAS and postMAM Media Assest Management Solution as part of a complete post facility upgrade.

TV Pro Gear (http://www.tvprogear.com), a leading systems integration and mobile solutions provider for the broadcast, production, and post industries, will be installing the storage and MAM solution along with a pair of turnkey Final Cut Pro workstations in the Honolulu Facility.  These edit suites each include two 23” Apple Cinema Displays, a Genelec Speaker System, and a 3.2GHz Quad Core Mac Pro with an AJA Kona 3 I/O Card installed.

“The Final Cut Pro suites provide PBS the ability to work in any format or resolution” said Vince Castell, “Along with the integrated workflow we’ve designed for them, the Final Cut Pro edit bays are ideal for the collaborative post-production and asset management environment that PBS Hawaii wanted to implement.”

TV Pro Gear will integrate these suites, along with PBS Hawaii’s legacy Final Cut System, connecting them to the Apace solutions.  Both the vStor and postMAM will be located in the station’s Master Control Room and linked to the edit stations via an IP connection.  This connection allows each client to access any content stored therein, creating an ideal environment for real-time collaborative editing.

The Apace vStor is shared network storage for DV, HDV, uncompressed SD (1:1, 8- /10-bit) and Compressed HD video capturing and editing applications like Avid Xpress/ Adrenaline DNxHD, Adobe PremierePro, Apple Final Cut Pro/ HD, Canopus EDIUS/ HD, Avid/ Pinnacle Liquid Pro and Sony Vegas and DVC Pro HD.  Multiple editing workstations can simultaneously access the storage pool and share the content through ubiquitously available Ethernet.  Shared content can then be sent to tape or directly broadcasted on air.

In addition to being accessible from the in-house edit suites, the proxy files and the administrative functions of the Apace systems can be managed globally from anybody with IP access.

“PBS was very excited about the ability to manage administration, training and troubleshooting of the collaborative storage and the setup of the media assets working over IP with the Engineers from Apace and TV Pro Gear, it’s like having their own in-house staff.” said Castell.

TV Pro Gear will finish the project by providing an extensive two-day training session to the staff at PBS Hawaii.  The training will be performed in conjunction with the Apace staff in order to provide PBS’ employees with a complete understanding of the storage solution, its customization options and the new workflow created around it.
