By: LINDA COSTELLO OF COMIC ZONE Conveniently located just off the 101 on the southeast corner of McDonald Drive and Granite Reef Road, Comic Zone is currently the only comic book store in Scottsdale! The business is family-owned and operated by Linda Costello, her sons, Andy Costello and Sean Costello, and Avery Goodman, all of Scottsdale, AZ. With combined relevant experience spanning a decade in retail, two decades of comic book familiarity, and over four decades of business expertise, the diverse talents of the four principals present a strong, united team. “We have some great ideas,” Ms. Costello boasts enthusiastically. “We are kicking off with a preview night on Dress Like a Ninja Day, Dec. 5th, from 4:00-8:00 pm. Anyone who shows up dressed like a Ninja gets a free comic. We will be serving pizza and soft drinks in a fun, playful atmosphere.” Saturday, Dec. 6th, is our Grand Opening from 12:00 – 8:00 pm. Two comic book authors will be visiting the store to autograph copies of their works. Jeff Mariotte will be offering special collector copies of his newest work, Zombie Cops, due to be released in January. Jay Fotos, writer of many Frank Frazetta-inspired comics will also be available with free variants or exclusive covers for all Frazetta comic sales. Other regular features of the store will be Saturday caricatures, regular video game tournaments, and community projects. Periodic raffles will be held, portions of which will be donated to various non-profits that benefit young adults, such as Alice Cooper’s The Rock Teen Center. For the holidays, the store will provide an opportunity for toy donations for the Arizona Children’s Center @ MMC to benefit the Childs Play Charity. “We believe in giving back,” asserts Ms. Costello. Future projects will include classes on how to draw and write comics, culminating in individual works that will be displayed in the store, as well as ideas on how to use comic books as teaching materials in the classroom.
