Dec. 31, 2008 - PRLog -- Universal healthcare for the people, a need- Robin Trehan

While there has long been talk in the United States about a need for a national healthcare system, it may be time to look towards a universal one instead.  Such a system would be beneficial in several ways.  Treatments used in some countries but not approved in others could be shared. Safety regulations would be more widespread.  Cost to the consumer would be reduced in many cases.  Let’s explore these further.

Regulations in countries such as the United States make it difficult to get certain treatments approved for public use.  A universal healthcare system would make it necessary to set up a system by which the regulations would be reviewed by a wider number of criteria.  This would allow for greater understanding between medical organizations as to the safety of certain treatments.  Greater understanding would lead to quicker approval, and the approval would be across the board.  This makes it available globally, giving more people a chance to realize the benefits.

The availability of some medications and treatments in only certain areas of the world has some people crossing borders and obtaining treatments currently illegal in their own country.  This practice opens up the chance that treatment will be received from somebody who is not licensed to administer treatment. Numerous deaths have resulted that could have been prevented had a treatment been available in the individual’s country.  A worldwide safety system would need to be in place and this making of the procedure available to all countries would help eliminate those who seek only to take advantage of those seeking relief that was not available in their area.  A uniform safety program would also help provide guidelines for facilities in areas of the world with rudimentary systems, allowing the citizens of those countries the same quality of treatment that is available in more developed areas.

When medications and treatments are available everywhere, the final cost is reduced.  Travel to other countries would no longer be necessary, eliminating travel expenses and loss of employment wages.  The wide availability would also lower the actual cost of the treatment or medication, allowing more people to be able to afford what was needed instead of just making it available to the elite few. Medical insurances would be adjusted to include more things.  In addition, the more widespread availability would make the market more price-competitive, eventually lowering the overall cost of the medication and treatment itself as providers strive to gain clientele.

Wider availability, uniform safety standards and a lower total cost would all result in a healthier world population.  This would translate into a more productive work force, which would increase the available wages for purchases outside the health industry.  This would end up stimulating the world’s economy. In the end, all would benefit from a universal healthcare practice.
