March 12, 2009 - PRLog -- Stonehurst Place, Atlanta’s first EarthCraft Certified B&B, is being recognized for its extensive environmentally and energy conscious renovation project. Southface Energy Institute, an organization which promotes the use of sustainable energy and environmental technologies in both residential and commercial properties, partners with Atlanta-based EarthCraft House which certifies metro-Atlanta projects. Southface and EarthCraft House honored Stonehurst Place on February 19, 2009 with the EarthCraft Renovation Project Award for 2008.

“I would like to congratulate you on receiving the EarthCraft Renovation Project Award for 2008,” said Daniel Harvey of Southface. “In appreciation of your participation in the EarthCraft renovation program and your dedication to creating an energy-efficient high performance home, we are glad to recognize your project as one of the most exceptional and comprehensive green renovations in the Atlanta area. Thank you for supporting EarthCraft and for using this home as an educational tool to teach others about the importance of energy, water, and resource conservation."

The massive renovation of Stonehurst Place, originally built in 1896, lasted more than a year and cost more than $1 million with approximately $300,000 spent on environmental elements of the renovation. The property features a solar thermal system consisting of ten solar panels that work to heat all the water used in the home. A BRAC greywater system sanitizes water collected from sinks and uses it to flush toilets. In addition, two 1700-gallon cisterns collect rainwater and use it to irrigate the landscaping at Stonehurst Place.

“We are so pleased to have received this award. The renovation project at Stonehurst was an honor to lead, start to finish,” shared owner Barb Shadomy after learning of the award. “I was fortunate to learn about green building and renovation techniques during my interior design training at London's Inchbald School of Design, and the opportunity to put them into practice at Stonehurst, our historic Atlanta home, was a dream come true.”

Not to be overshadowed is the restored grandeur of the property which boasts three suites and two bedrooms, each with en suite bath. Every room is meticulously styled and an impressive collection of original works from artists including Andy Warhol, Dale Chihuly, Jim Dine and William Wegman are displayed throughout the home.

Recently Stonehurst Place has been recognized for not only it’s luxurious setting and first class guest services, but also for its efforts to lead by example in areas of conserving energy and environmentally sensitive practices. Stonehurst Place has been featured in several media spotlights including HGTV, WGCL-TV Atlanta, WSBTV Atlanta, DailyCandy and various upcoming publications.

Stonehurst Place is a luxury, eco-friendly bed and breakfast in Atlanta, Georgia USA, set in an 1896 National Historic Register home. Transformed by a 2008 award-winning green renovation led by designer/owner Barb Shadomy, Stonehurst Place is the first EarthCraft certified inn or bed and breakfast in Metro-Atlanta. More than one million USDollars was spent to extensively renovate and restore the property, adding environmentally friendly features like a water reclamation system that pipes collected rainwater into two 1700-gallon cisterns. The water is sent through a 6-step filtration system, heated with solar power and sent as clean water used for garden irrigation. A greywater system was installed to sanitize and recycle water for uses like flushing toilets. The combined eco-effort is estimated to save hundreds of thousands of city water each year. In addition to the green elements of Stonehurst Place, museum quality art and stylish interiors attract guests from around the globe.
