Rebecca Sharp Colmer, Certified Senior Advisor Provides Tips for Care Givers to Reduce Stress

It is natural to have emotional reactions to the challenges and responsibilities of being a caregiver; don’t use the holidays as an excuse to allow your stress level to boil over

March 26, 2009 - PRLog -- Ann Arbor, MI – A care giver’s job is a huge responsibility that can be stressful, especially during holidays.  Holidays seem to be a time when everyone’s stress levels are up; a time when people feel more tired than usual.  Rebecca Sharp Colmer is an experienced care giver who understands this feeling.  During a recent interview, Rebecca discussed tips for care givers to reduce their stress level.

Rebecca said, “The most important thing is to keep your emotions in check.  You have no control over anyone else’s behavior; however, you do have complete control over how you respond to their behavior.”

Rebecca also explained that a care giver already has a full plate, so they should encourage friends and family to help out when necessary.  “Remember what is important and stay focused on the needs of the care-receiver,” said Colmer.  “Stay organized and practice the power of a positive attitude; turn off the negative self-talk.”

Care givers are a generous, giving type of people who often forget to take time for themselves.  Care givers need to think about their own health and well-being as well as the person they’re caring for.  Rebecca suggests, “Practice deep breathing several times a day, exercise and eat right.  Utilize your support system by sharing your feelings with family and friends.”

During the interview, Rebecca acknowledged that there are millions of people in similar situations who need to be proactive and locate resources within their family circle and within the community so they are well prepared to seek help when it is necessary.  “The holiday season is a time to capture special memories; tune in to the care-receiver and encourage them to talk from the heart and to share their wisdom,” said Rebecca.  “This can be a wonderful gift and a rewarding experience for everyone involved.”
