April 26, 2009 - PRLog -- The operation lasted for two and half-hours. The tumour had in fact occupied the entire abdominal cavity endangering the life of the patient.  Such a condition is rarely found. Dr R.K. Mishra is a Director and Chief Surgeon of Laparoscopy Hospital, New Delhi.
Surprisingly enough, Mr. Chandeshwar Prasad Rai, police inspector,  in Jharkhand had never suffered any pain. On finding his abdomen growing unusually large and bulky, incapacitating him to walk and also showing sign of loosing weight, his kith and kins advised him to visit a doctor.  On examination by Dr R.K. Mishra, it was diagnosed that Mr. Chandeswar Prasad Rai,s protruded abdomen is carrying a big tumour.
Mr.. Rai had consulted many doctors and was initially treated for tuberculosis.. Finding no relief, he was referred to All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi by a surgeon from Jharkhand.   The requisite investigations and Biopsy were conducted in the AIIMS to confirm the type of tumour.  The patient was called on 20th May, 2009 as to finally decide for surgery.  Despite all that the patient was in great dilemma. Meanwhile, the patient came to Dr. R.K. Mishra in his Laparoscopy Hospital, New Delhi. Dr. Mishra examined the patient in detail and found that his condition is deteriorating fast and with a view to save his life, Dr. Mishra advised the patient for an urgent surgery to which the patient agreed quickly.  The surgery was performed   on 26.4.2009 by Dr. R.K. Mishra and he was assisted by Dr. Sanjay Sharma and Dr. Anil Arora.
“It was a complicated surgery considering the of the age of patient (…years) and the fact that his haemoglobin count was as  low as …. ,” said Dr Mishra. “Also, the tumour was retroperitoneal and surrounding aorta and both the kidneys.
'It pushed everything aside and was pressing the aorta and kidney, creating vascular and respiratory complecations,’ Laparoscopic Surgeon Dr. Mishra said. 'The operation was complicated by the size of the tumour and during this the patient received four packages of blood transfusion.'
Tumours of that size are almost always benign,  and proved to be lethal  by severing blood  circulation or exerting/ increasing pressure on vital parts of the body.
“It was removed from the Retroperitoneum after separating the Kidney, Spleen, Large intestine, Aorta and Vena Cava. We also repaired the bowel and other surrounding structure,” said Dr. Mishra. “We will send the tumour to the histopathology to find out if it was cancerous.”
