April 28, 2009 - PRLog -- Bannockburn, IL – Healthy Life Laboratories has announced the release of its first iPhone Application for use by diabetes patients and healthcare professionals – the A1c Converter.  This application, the first of its kind for use on iPhone and iPod Touch systems, is designed to help diabetics better understand the relationship between blood glucose and hemoglobin A1c.
Maintaining good blood glucose control is essential for diabetics.  Home glucose meters provide users with a snapshot of the glucose level in the blood at the time of blood testing.  Hemoglobin A1c is a marker that provides a look back at glucose control over the previous 90-120 days.  Physicians and diabetes educators use A1c as a disease management tool to gauge the effectiveness of diabetes therapies.
“We wanted to develop an easy-to-use tool to permit those familiar with A1c testing to determine their Estimated Average Glucose (eAG), as recommended by the American Diabetes Association, and at the same time provide a means for patients who are given a target for A1c to use their blood glucose results to estimate their A1c outcome,” explains Dr. Jack Maggiore, president of Healthy Life Laboratories.
This application’s two-way calculator converts input A1c scores to average glucose levels, and vice versa, and a sliding scale shows the continuous relationship between A1c and glucose.  This application permits the user to answer questions like, “I had a daily glucose of 169 today. If my glucose stays at this level, what will my A1c score be?”  Similarly, if the user knows his A1c score was 7.1, this tool will tell him that his average glucose for the past 90 days was 157.  This knowledge might help the individual know where his daily glucose level should be to achieve the desired A1c score.
The A1c Converter is the first in a series of planned applications which will include interactive diabetes educational games to help children better manage their glucose, and a training application on collecting quality blood samples for glucose testing.
