Scottish Spina Bifida Association: The official charity of the IRN-BRU Scottish Curry Awards

“Last year’s event raised over £10,000 for the Association which was fantastic and made a big difference to all those affected and I am sure this year’s awards will be equally as successful. The majority of those born with spina bifida will be paralysed from the waist down and 80% will also have hydrocephalus which causes some problems with speech, hearing, sight and learning. Every year in Scotland one in 500 pregnancies are affected by the disabilities and there is no cure.

“Can you imagine the trauma when you are told that there is something wrong with your child and it is a life-long disability? The Association provide specialist family support services to over 3000 people in Scotland affected by the conditions and a support worker is always available whenever someone needs emotional support and practical advice. By providing lifelong support they ensure that all those affected have the highest quality of life possible. What more could you want for any child?

The Scottish Spina Bifida Association has developed its services so that, alongside the facilities available within their Family Support Centre, they now offer additional assistance such as information and training days, social and leisure groups, peer group support, and health check appointments.

The Association needs over £800,000 per annum to provide these services and to ensure those affected by spina bifida and its associated conditions live the highest quality of life possible. Government funding provides less than 4% of the funding required which means support from the public, and events such as the IRN-BRU Scottish Curry Awards, is crucial.

The Scottish Spina Bifida Association will be given stage time at the event and a short film narrated by Gordon Ramsay about the work that they do will be screened. This will not only assist in fundraising but also in developing knowledge and awareness of the Association and its service users.  

The IRN-BRU Scottish Curry Awards will raise funds for the Scottish Spina Bifida Association through a raffle and an auction held on the evening.

To get the ball rolling on celebrity donations for the auction Gordon Ramsay has gifted two tickets to his Gala Dinner on the 29th October 2009. This exclusive event is limited to 200 tickets and there is already a waiting list for this sought after prize. Tickets normally cost £500 per head and all the guests have the opportunity to meet Gordon and Tana Ramsay as well as other well known personalities.

Celtic Football Club has donated a signed jersey and IRN-BRU have pledged a hospitality package for up to five people to attend a Queens Park FC match of their choice for 2009/10 season at Hampden Park.
