Children's Literacy Advocate Crowned Mrs. Maryland Earth

May 19, 2009 - PRLog -- For the past 11 months Peta-Gay Lewis has served her community and shared the Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) message as Mrs. Montgomery County.  This changed however on May 6, 2009 when she was awarded the title of Mrs. Maryland Earth.

The international finals for the Mrs. Earth pageant will convene in sunny Orlando, Florida. The Mrs. Earth pageant is self described as "the elite pageant for married woman. The Mrs. Earth pageant was created to celebrate the outstanding success a woman has achieved as a wife, mother, friend and community leader. Mrs. Earth will be the total package: beautiful, successful, confident and driven."

When asked about her experience as Mrs. Montgomery County Peta-Gay says" my goal has been to build a literate nation, one child at a time.  I have been successful in doing this through my partnership with Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) and my platform of Reading: The Key to Your Future. As the Executive Director of the Beginning the Journey chapter of RIF I have educated the public on the importance of reading, planned engaging activities that foster an interest in reading, secured funding to procure literacy materials, distributed reading materials to low income families, served a reading tutor and online reading mentor, and lobbied Congress to increase funding for children's literacy programs."

With the title of Mrs. Maryland Earth, Peta-Gay, will be able to reach a larger audience to share her message.  She says she feels humbled to have been blessed with the opportunity to be the state's official representative at such a prestigious pageant."

Mrs. Lewis is available to facilitate workshops on getting children excited about reading, encouraging children who don't like to read to become better readers and sharing tips with parents on how to be more involved in their child's reading progress.
