Your Smile A Predictor For Divorce Risk

May 20, 2009 - PRLog -- (Taylor, PA)—Researchers at DePauw University have found that people with weak smiles are five times more likely to be divorced at some point in their lives than people who smile enthusiastically—people the lead researcher said had “big, toothy smiles.”

According to lead researcher Dr. Matt Hertenstein, smiling freely is indicative of a greater ability to share emotions and feelings—the cornerstones of good communication. Being able to communicate effectively means a greater ability to build lasting relationships, according to Hertenstein. But what if you’re already divorced?

Tara Amaral and Chris Frie are the authors of Our Great Kids, a book designed for divorced parents who want to keep the lines of communication open with their kids and with their ex-spouses.

“Divorce is unfortunately extremely common,” says Ms. Amaral. “What really counts in these cases is if you can learn to communicate openly afterward, especially with your children. Both Chris and I are divorced so we know the challenges divorced parents face.”
