May 22, 2009 - PRLog -- Los Angeles, CA – Patricia L. Gerbarg, MD, internationally renowned holistic mental health expert and pioneer of CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine) will be the Charles O. Cooke MD Distinguished Visiting Lecturer at the Brown University Reunion in Providence, Rhode Island, Saturday, May 23, 1009, at 3:30 p.m. in the Nathan Markuvitz Auditorium of the Sidney E. Frank Hall of Life Sciences building, Room 220.  She will discuss How to Stay Up When the Economy is Down: Natural Ways to Reduce Worry and Boost Your Energy and Mood.  She will include wellness solutions from the highly-praised new book she co-authored with Drs. Richard P. Brown and Dr. Philip Muskin, HOW TO USE HERBS, NUTRIENTS, AND YOGA IN MENTAL HEALTH CARE (WW Norton, 2009).

“Maintaining physical and mental energy in times of stress is crucial. When chronic stress depletes energy, and cellular repair mechanisms fail, medical illnesses are more likely to progress,” says Dr. Gerbarg.   She will discuss safe, effective methods to improve energy, mood, productivity, and stress-resilience. She will focus on an ancient medicinal herb, Rhodiola rosea, and on Breath-Body-Mind practices that rapidly reduce anxiety and bring the stress response system into balance.  Dr. Gerbarg will review research evidence including her studies of tsunami survivors, veterans with posttraumatic stress, and individuals affected by the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks.

The Charles O. Cooke MD lectureship is endowed through a bequest from Mrs. Ruth Cooke Peterson.  Its purpose is “to provide a venue for a branch of medicine (in this case alternative and complementary medicine) which can hold the promise of significant and lasting benefit to medical education at Brown, or to the community, or for the delivery of health care services,” states Brown University’s Amy R. Umstadter, Assistant Director of Stewardship & Events.   Physicians who attend the lecture may receive 1 CME credit.

Dr. Gerbarg, a Brown University alumna, is a clinically trained psychiatrist and Assistant Professor in Clinical Psychiatry at New York Medical College.  She graduated from Harvard Medical School and the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute.  In addition to her clinical practice in Kingston, NY, she provides consultation and facilitates the development of research projects on the health benefits of mind-body practices for recovery from mass disasters.

Dr. Gerbarg has been interviewed extensively by radio stations, magazines, and newspapers.   She and her co-author husband, psychiatrist Richard P. Brown, MD, maintain a web site providing health information and resources at HaveAHealthyMind.com.
