May 29, 2009 - PRLog -- Washington, D.C., – Hundreds of cancer survivors and their loved ones are expected to join WHUR 96.3 FM - Howard University for a weekend of fun and celebration of cancer survivorship Saturday, May 30th on the track at Prince George’s Community College. It’s part of the “American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.”

The event, which is a fundraiser for cancer research, education, prevention, and patient services, begins at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 30th and runs through 9 a.m. Sunday, May 31st. “Relay for Life” is a celebration of life and also a time to remember those who have lost the cancer battle.

The celebration begins with a victory lap of more than 100 cancer survivors who help set the tone for the entire event, which includes a candlelight ceremony. Persons camp out with tents, sleeping bags, and even barbeque grills to make the overnight event a fun evening for survivors and their families. WHUR provides music, beverages, prizes, and giveaways through the night. There will be a special performance this year at 5pm by 76 Degrees West Band.

Relay for Life is a community driven event where persons form teams of 10 or more and take turns walking laps around the track. In addition, there’s music, dancing, food, and fun for the entire family. WHUR’s host of the mid-day Triscina Grey helps to keep the survivors going through the wee hours of the night with the county’s largest line-dance.

The Relay was originally created as a 24-hour event because cancer never sleeps. Someone who has cancer battles it 24-hours a day. “Cancer touches the lives of us all. WHUR wants to be on the front line in helping to make cancer a thing of the past. We look forward to a long partnership with the American Cancer Society in the battle to defeat cancer,” said WHUR General Manager Jim Watkins.

Last year in Prince George’s County, there were more than 14-thousand new cases of cancer. Donations to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life can be made by logging onto http://www.whur.com and clicking on the American Cancer Society link.
