Gerbarg, MD, internationally renowned holistic mental health expert and pioneer of CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine) will be the featured speaker at the Northern Dutchess Lyme Disease Support Group at First Baptist Church, 11 Astor Drive, Rhinebeck, New York, on Thursday June 11, 2009 at 6 pm. She will discuss how to promote optimal wellness for those suffering from the long-term effects of Lyme disease. She will include solutions from the highly-praised new book she co-authored with Drs. Richard P. Brown and Dr. Philip Muskin, HOW TO USE HERBS, NUTRIENTS, AND YOGA IN MENTAL HEALTH CARE (WW Norton, January 2009). The lecture and Q & A are open to the general public as well as to health care practitioners. Admission is free. Dr. Gerbarg knows about Lyme disease, an infectious disease caused by bacteria usually transmitted from animals to hard-bodied ticks to humans, through personal experience. For five years, her symptoms and pains went undiagnosed, and, therefore untreated. “Seeing every specialist at top notch medical centers who could do nothing for me made me willing to try complementary treatments,” “Lyme disease is endemic in many areas of the country and the number of afflicted is growing. Early detection and treatment is critical for cure and sadly often absent largely due to poor diagnostic tests, misinformation and bias within the medical community,” affirms Mary Belliveau, spokesperson of the Northern Dutchess Lyme Disease Support Group. “Support groups and organizations,” Dr. Gerbarg is a clinically trained psychiatrist and Assistant Professor in Clinical Psychiatry at New York Medical College. She graduated from Harvard Medical School and the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. In addition to her clinical practice in Kingston, NY, she provides consultation and facilitates the development of research projects on the health benefits of mind-body practices for recovery from mass disasters such at the September 11th World Trade Center attacks, the southeast Asian tsunami, and military personnel. She and her co-author husband, psychiatrist Richard P. Brown, MD, maintain a web site providing health information and resources at HaveAHealthyMind.com. For more information on Lyme disease see LymeNet.org, ilads.org, or the LymeDiseaseAssociation.org. A documentary film, Under Our Skin, from Open Eyes Pictures, produced in 2008, reports on “this emerging epidemic of staggering proportions.” # # # Author Ambassador offers business development, shepherding, and marketing services for authors, publishers, and "green" companies.
