BLOWING ROCK, NC (June 2009) – The second phase of America’s oldest continuous horse show will take place in Blowing Rock in late July. The 86th Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show, held at the Town’s Equestrian Preserve, will feature Hunter/Jumper competition Wednesday through Sunday July 22 through 26, and July 29 through August 2.

This year’s Charity Horse Show events started with the Saddlebred show June 11 through 14; more than 350 horses and riders competed in 105 divisions for $15,000 in prize money. Competitors came from all around the Southeast, bringing their aptly named mounts with them: Iamnotacow, Malice in Wonderland and License to Chill were all present.

In spite of the anticipated influx of competitors for the end-of-July Hunter/Jumper events, Tourism Development Authority Executive Director Tracy Brown expects there will be plenty of rooms available in and around Blowing Rock for visitors and spectators.  However, he suggests booking early to avoid last-minute problems. The Charity Horse Show is also an economic generator for the Town. “Data shows that four people accompany each horse in the show and spend an average of $150 per day during the event. That’s a significant benefit for the Town and its merchants,” Brown said.
