July 17, 2009 - PRLog -- Galveston’s Hotel Galvez, known as the “Queen of the Gulf,” has graced the beachfront since 1911. As the hotel prepares for its 100th anniversary in 2011, Hotel Galvez invites former guests and visitors to share their family photos, stories and mementos of the historic hotel for a commemorative book and display.

Gary Cartwright, author of “Galveston – A History of the Island,” is writing this commemorative book on the hotel which will be released in December 2010. “Over the years, Hotel Galvez has been the site for numerous weddings, proms, parties and balls as well as honeymoons and family trips,” says Cartwright. “These personal photos and stories will complement the content of this book.”

Photos and stories can be posted on the Hotel Galvez Facebook Page or mailed to Hotel Galvez Marketing & Sales, 2024 Seawall Blvd., Galveston, TX 77550. Duplicate photos or digital photos, rather than original photos, are requested as they will not be returned.

The Hotel Galvez was built as a symbol of Galveston’s resilience following the Great Storm of 1900. A group of businessmen pulled their resources and raised $1 million to open the hotel on June 10, 1911 at 6 p.m. The hotel has a colorful history from serving as a temporary White House for the staff of President Franklin Roosevelt to serving as a working facility for the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. In the 1920s through 1940s, Hotel Galvez was the social hub of Galveston then known as the “Playground of the Southwest.”

The Hotel Galvez, A Wyndham® Historic Hotel and National Trust Historic Hotel of America, remains the only historic beachfront hotel in Galveston. The Hotel Galvez is rated four diamonds by AAA and owned by Galveston preservationists Cynthia and George Mitchell and as such is part of Mitchell Historic Properties.
