1 Second Boot Time Reached

Linux expert company MontaVista has managed to break all boot time records by demonstrating an embedded Linux system cold booting in 1 second.

July 19, 2009 - PRLog -- MontaVista specializes in embedded Linux solutions for time critical systems. Utilizing years of expertise and knowledge they have now been able to present the all time record of booting an OS in 1 second. Of cause the entire setup has been specifically tailored for an ultra fast boot time, so this is not exactly what we will see in commercial computers.

Linux in general has great potential for achieving fast boot times and Intel has been working on using that in their own netbooks with the OS “Moblin”. The goal is to bring a cold boot down to 5 seconds, which in it self is a big achievement that any user will be very happy about.

Microsoft is also aware of the issue with long boot times in Windows and I think they have been adressing this in Windows 7, but a big jump to say a 10 second boot time is probably too much to expect.
