Follow on Google News | Humanitarian Charity launched in UKISSO Seva, the humanitarian sister charity of the International Swaminarayan Satsang Organisation (ISSO) launched in the UK last Sunday with five simultaneous charity walks across the country.
By: ISSO Seva One of the venues was North West London, where a 10k walk took place between the SKS Swaminarayan Temple, Kenton - Harrow and the Shree Swaminarayan Temple in Willesden Lane. Sarah Teather, Member of Parliament for Brent East, Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Housing, and Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Guantanamo Bay kicked off the walk from the SKS Swaminarayan Temple in Kenton along with holy saints from India, who started the walk in a traditional way, by breaking coconuts. Said Rajesh Bhudiya, Vice Treasurer of the charity, "The motto of ISSO Seva is 'Serving Humanity' and Sarah Teather is at the head of a high power Parliamentary Group dealing with Human Rights in Guantanamo Bay, hence we felt she would be the ideal choice for leading our North West London Charity walk from where she has been elected". The MP has incidently worked for a Cancer charity in the past (MacMillan Cancer Relief) and ten percent of the proceeds after expenses will be donated to another cancer charity, Cancer Research UK. Just before 10am, the scheduled time for the walk to kick off it started to rain giving organisers a scare. This was however short lived as it was bright and sunny within minutes. "We actually consider it to be lucky if it rains a bit at the start" said one volunteer. Priya Patel, coordinator of the North London walk said she was happy with the turnout and mentioned that there was representation from people of various backgrounds. She has collected in excess of £ 2000 in sponsorships for doing the walk herself. The walk ended at Shree Swaminarayan Temple in Willesden Lane around 1pm after 2 pit stops en route, where participants were treated to snacks and drinks. The other centres where the walk took place were South London (Streatham), Brighton,Crawley and Leicester. # # # ISSO Seva is an independent charity active in various parts of the world since 2001.
