Follow on Google News | Nissan Leaf Concept Well Received by Maryland Delaware Nissan DealerThe future is Coming. Nissan is planning the release of an electric vehicle that will get up to 367 mpg surpassing GM's Volt.
Experts believe that gas prices will be anywhere from $2.50 to $5.00 per gallon in the year 2012 which is when Nissan Motor Company plans on producing the zero emissions vehicle. The Leaf is expected to reach fuel economy upwards of 367 mpg surpassing General Motor’s EV sedan, the Volt, which is expected to reach a mere 230 mpg. The U.S. department of energy granted Nissan a loan of 1.6 billion dollars to ready their plant in Smyrna, Tennessee for production of the new Leaf, while Nissan dealerships can expect the Leaf in their showrooms by late 2010. Preston Nissan in Maryland has begun a recent transformation in order to reduce their carbon foot print and become a greener business. David Wilson, President of Preston Automotive Group, enacted company policies such as turning off all lights when leaving a room unoccupied and keeping all thermostats at 75 degrees or higher during the summer months. The Preston Automotive Group also is a participating dealer in the CARS program, helping to get high emissions vehicles off the road. With the production of zero emission vehicles comes a need for charging stations. Much like a gas station these stations offer “fuel” in the form of electric, charging EV’s to 80% within 30 minutes and %100 taking up to 7 hours. These stations are currently in the developmental stage as well. With co2 emission as one of the contributing factors in global warming, the development of Nissan’s EV the Leaf is possibly the next big step for the future of the automobile industry. Zero emission vehicles may be the answer to our dependence on oil and our search for alternative fuels. Nissan Motor Company plans to be producing 200,000 units of the Leaf annually by 2012.
