By: Lynn Team Building simply accelerates the natural process of team formation by setting very clear goals right from the start. A "team building" workshop uses a variety of tools and techniques to accelerate the process further, bringing the team together quickly and effectively. Every member of a team is an individual with their own skills, needs and ideas. Being a member of a team does not take away that individual identity, so it is very important to recognise and exploit it. A team, by itself, does not exist. We may look at a group of people, working together with common goals and a desire to achieve and call what we see "Teamwork". Really powerful teamwork happens when individuals are working both for their own and for shared goals. They have a sense of commitment and of personal benefit which is powerful and irresistible. n today's environment businesses need to continually build on and improve the way they operate. Interventions like training, coaching, mentoring and recruiting high performers all have their place. However one of the series of interventions that is becoming more popular are 2-3 hour experiential team building workshops based on addressing business performance. The objective is to both find new ways of improving performance and removing blocks that hinder results. When combined with targeted coaching support they are often the most cost effective way of making genuine improvements to results. In addition when done properly they will increase both the motivation and job satisfaction of the team. To achieve maximum benefit the team needs to take an active part and have a degree of honesty and openness. Management need to agree to take feedback provided it is presented in a positive way and the workshops need to be facilited professionally. It may or may not be appropriate for the manager to be present depending on the subject and context. Team Build have been developing a series of such workshops over the last five years with topics ranging from: Increasing Sales; motivation; influencing; Another advantage of this approach is that the initial investment can be one workshop to address a particular issue. This enables the approach to be validated. However the best long term benefit will be achieved through a longer term programme aligned to team and company objectives. The contribution of efffective teams to company performance cannot be overstated and in the current business top managers appreciate additional help in this key area.
