In the 12-minute video, the experts describe the needed transition from spindle measurement methods developed in the 1930s to newer methods using noncontact sensors and computer analysis. The older Schlesinger method used a dial indicator to measure a machine tool spindle while it was turned very slowly, often by hand. Modern methods using high-performance noncontact sensors, temperature sensors and computer data acquisition, enable measurement of the spindle at full operating speeds in multiple axes and with temperature data to show thermal dependencies.

Compliance with international standards such as ASME B5.54 and B5.57 and ISO 230-7 require these multi-axis spindle tests. The video discusses the advantages of machine tool characterization of capability and specifications before a part is made, including reduced production costs, verification of machine capability before acceptance and improved machine assignment dependent on critical part parameters.
