Sept. 10, 2009 - PRLog -- According to a study carried out by Dr. Nicola Dibben, who is a music psychologist from the University of Sheffield, singing along to favorite music through the car stereo can help music-loving Britons drive safely. In the survey, almost two-thirds (63%) of the safe drivers, those who are free from car accidents within 4 years, claimed that listening to the music can sooth them and make them feel calmer and more relaxed. And a quarter (24%) said that music actually helped in concentrating.

Dr. Dibben says:
“Singing while driving stimulates not only the mind but also the body which in turn produces heightened alertness and reduced fatigue. Singing may be less distracting than conversation because drivers recall words to songs they already know, or because it is fairly easy to learn the words to music where it uses repeated lyrics.

“The Privilege Insurance research also finds, however, that some music can be distracting, so it is important that drivers choose music which is recognizable to them, is unlikely to distract them and will put them in a positive mood. Choosing the right music can actually boost concentration and increase considerate, safe driving.”

On the basis of the findings in this study, Privilege Insurance also lists five tip tips to tell drivers how to pick the safest driving soundtrack:

1.Mid-paced music with not-so-aggressive lyrics is perfect choice in the car.
2.If it’s a boring long journey, choose music which varies in volume and tempo so that you can get increased alertness.
3.Try the music which can evoke pleasant memories, ensuring a positive frame of mind.
4.Play music at a comfortable listening level and keep the volume under 75dB. Otherwise, it will cause distraction.

Now pop on your headphones immediately? Stop! It’s illegal and dangerous. Do you have any idea that in most areas it is illegal to drive a vehicle while wearing headsets and in Washington the fine for headphones is $124? For the sake of safety, you couldn’t wear earphones while driving, since your hearing ability will be lessoned and you may be unable to hear the horn warning from the vehicles around and the sirens for the ambulance o police to get out of the way in emergencies. All these can get you involved in car crash. Singer George Michael once listened to music with ear plugs while driving. Wham! His car hit onto the pedestrian island. It’s dangerous if you use a headphone set while driving because you’re not only running the risk of messing up your car or life, but everyone else on the road too. What should the music fans do then? Luckily, there is a decent solution, namely FM transmitter.
