Auditel’s Ironman Alan Ford raises more than £2,000 for Cancer Research

Sept. 10, 2009 - PRLog -- This month, Auditel Cost Management Consultant Alan Ford set out in the toughest multi-sport race, the Ironman UK Triathlon, which took place in Bolton. Alan who joined Auditel in 2004, pursued a career in Automotive Engineering and worked on a diverse range of projects from the Ford Ka to the Th!nk electric car.

Alan said: “Cancer Research  is particularly close to my heart as some of my good friends and myself have lost our mums to breast cancer over the last few years. You may well ask what is the Ironman UK event? Well, it's a 2.4-mile open water swim, 112-mile bike ride and a 26-mile full marathon, all one after the other!” Alan’s aim was to get closer to the world record of less than 8 hours, although a time of around 12 hours was his target. “Realistically, if I can finish in one piece before it gets dark and raise some money for the charity I'll be happy!”

He reports that on the day, the Bolton crowd were fantastic, offering support every step of the way. All the volunteers and police were great at marshalling the route and stopping the traffic and he finished the course in just over 12 hours. Alan reveals: “I had a couple of bad periods about 3 ½ miles into the bike ride and after 18 miles into the running. At that point, it really started to hurt. But I eventually came 56th in my age group out of 285, and overall, 291 out of 1,223 competitors. The winning time was 8 hours 45 minutes with the last competitor arriving at the finish after 17 hours. So yes, I was closer to winning than coming last!”
