Sept. 10, 2009 - PRLog -- With regard to outsourcing jobs to other countries, America may be going “out of the frying pan into the fire”. Some people feel that sending American jobs overseas is a good idea because it helps companies save money on employment costs. This oversimplified and shortsighted view is based on the principle that anything that helps a corporation’s bottom line is good for both the company itself and the economy as a whole. However, sending jobs abroad is a bad idea for a number of reasons.

First and foremost, unemployment is at an all-time high in the United States. Outsourcing threatens all workers, both skilled and unskilled. People from all backgrounds and walks of life - factory workers, customer service agents, information technology technicians – are in danger of losing their income and benefits due to this practice. In fact, over three million America jobs are expected to be lost due to outsourcing by 2015.

Secondly, when jobs are moved out of the country, this diminishes the pool of available workers who have the education and/or experience required to perform certain functions. This weakens America’s competitive advantage against other countries. For example, if there are fewer IT jobs available due to outsourcing then fewer Americans will choose to pursue a career in that sector. This is an obvious disadvantage when it comes to America’s ability to innovate and lead in the field of information technology.

A third reason involves quality. Customer service positions provide a good illustration. Attempts are often made to “Americanize” the accents and jargon of non-Americans working in overseas call centers. However, many people still experience difficulties while trying to communicate effectively with non-native English speakers who live in a different country.

Outsourcing can also harm a corporation’s reputation and public image. Given the option, many Americans would choose to do business with a company that they feel is helping the U.S. economy rather than hurting it.

In summary, companies need to look beyond the surface when it comes to sending American jobs out of the country. When it comes to outsourcing, “all that glitters is not gold”.
