The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) is an honors organization for high-achieving freshmen and sophomores at 240 universities across the United States. Flowers, a Chicago Illinois native, was chosen for this award because of his dedication to growing the NSCS chapter he founded on the SXU campus in 2002. As chapter president he oversaw all service projects, implemented fundraising drives and helped to establish a successful mentoring program for middle school students. Because of the outstanding programs he put in place, the SXU NSCS chapter was awarded the New Chapter of the Year Award for the 2002-2003 academic year. Flowers has since graduated from SXU and now attends graduate school at Roosevelt University where he plans to start another NSCS chapter. He is working towards his Masters of Science degree in Biotechnology within the Roosevelt University Biotechnology and Chemical Science Program. Distinguished Service Award applicants are required to complete an essay explaining how they made an impact in their NSCS chapter or within NSCS as a whole. “We read hundreds of applications throughout the year, and Alexander’s truly stood out in the group,” said Stephen E. Loflin, NSCS’ executive director. “We are proud have him as a member of our honor society and are eager to see him develop as a leader in the community as he has developed within our organization.” Flowers received an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to attend NSCS’ annual Convention and accept the $1,000 award and a congratulatory plaque. # # # NSCS is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and is the nation's only interdisciplinary honors organization to invite first and second year college students. NSCS has more than 625,000 members and 242 chapters in 50 states. End
