Sept. 17, 2009 - PRLog -- The organisation is the chosen charity for the event on 1 November which is organised by Oceanic Consulting, the Scottish-based black and ethnic promotions consultancy.

The free event will see the city’s George Square come to life with authentic Indian music and dancing, a light show, lantern making, face painting and bustling jewellery and clothing stalls.

The event will also be an opportunity for people to find out more about the work of Sightsavers. Working in over 30 developing countries, the charity prevents blindness, restores sight and supports those who are irreversibly blind through education, training and counselling.

Alison Graham, Head of Sightsavers International in Scotland explains: “Today, there are 45 million people in the world who are blind, yet 75% of blindness is preventable or curable.  Just £17 can transform a person’s life by restoring sight to someone suffering from cataract, the biggest cause of blindness.”

Among those whose life has been transformed by Sightsavers is 44-year-old Krishnan Mishar from the town of Motipur in North Eastern India, who will be enjoying the visual spectacle of Diwali once again this year having recently had cataract surgery to restore his vision. Married with five young children and two elderly parents to support, Krishnan was running a street stall until he found his livelihood threatened when he began having problems with his sight. Krishnan visited a screening run by Sightsavers’ partner, the Muzaffarpur Eye Hospital, where he was diagnosed with cataract, the most common cause of blindness in the world. Following surgery Krishnan made a fast recovery and has been able to work freely and cycle to work safely again.
Alison Graham said: “Sightsavers is delighted to have been selected by Oceanic Consulting as the chosen charity for the ‘Diwali at the Square’ event. With the support of public donations raised at events such as this we are able to restore sight and transform the lives of people like Krishnan in the developing world.”
Oceanic Consulting said: “It was an obvious choice for us to select Sightsavers as our charity partner. Through the work of the charity, millions of people once living in darkness have been given the power of sight again.”
The free event will take place at Glasgow’s George Square from 1pm until 9pm.  For more information contact Oceanic Consulting on 0141 243 2848 or visit the website www.hungamafestivals.info
