By: McDonald Media A long-time lover of all kinds of music and particularly Jazz, Flohr is also a fan of the cities where great music can be found in small clubs, bars and restaurants. Numerous past works have featured bar scenes and street scenes of cities like Atlanta, New Orleans, New York and Chicago. Now, the artist turns his brushes to the musicians themselves and the deeply charged settings in which this music is made. Flohr, who readily admits that he prefers to sketch ‘in the moment’ as a scene unfolds, says that this new body of work captures the pure emotion that band members and singers display when creating their music. A significant piece in the collection, called "Blue Note," was based on a band Flohr saw at the historic New York Jazz club. Depicting these ordinary moments in extraordinary ways, Flohr’s work displays an artistic mastery of color, perspective, technique and vision. He can often be seen around town at home and on his travels in nightclubs, bars and cafes, sketchbook in hand, capturing the shifting colors and dynamics of people as they mingle and interact. A graduate of the San Francisco Academy of Art College, Flohr has been inspired by the work of Monet, Manet, Pisarro, Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec. He readily admits that he favors pure pigment straight from the tube which exhibits his "love of the vibrant color and the durability and richness that oil paint brings to the canvas." Recognized into New York’s Society of Illustrators, Flohr joins the ranks of legendary predecessors such as Norman Rockwell, Maxfield Parrish and N.C. Wyeth. Since his debut on the art scene Flohr has been riding an escalating wave of popularity with the public and growing esteem from the international art community. With each new painting, Flohr adds to that momentum. "The energy at this show is going to be so exciting," says Gary Handler, co-owner of Vinings Gallery. "As one of our top-selling artists, it is always a pleasure to welcome Michael back to Atlanta and with this group of new paintings, collectors and art enthusiasts are really in for a special treat and something that should not be missed." The Vinings Gallery events kick off a month-long exhibition and sale of Flohr's work, which will run through November 27, 2009. High Resolution images of Michael Flohr's recent works are available to accompany publication.
