Oct. 9, 2009 - PRLog -- New York, NY - Xenia Siamas, a highly regarded model and film actress, has joined Palms for Life Fund as Ambassador of its global alliance to end hunger and poverty. Her involvement comes at the launch of a gripping domestic project to bring awareness about hunger in the United States which affects 36 million Americans, of which 12.4 million are children.

To address the issue of hunger among Americans, Palms for Life Fund has launched a national film contest called “Faces of Hunger in America”, in which filmmakers 25 years of age or under are being called upon to document hunger and its devastating effects in their own communities.

“The ultimate goal of this project is to take an issue that is currently invisible and make it visible,” says Hannah Laufer-Rottman, Executive Director of Palms For Life Fund. The project is attracting young filmmakers from across the country and already has more than 230 participants nationwide.

Siamas is most recognized for her roles in films such as Push, Casino Jack, the upcoming action-thriller Alpha Numeric and El Chico Blanco starring Peter Facinelli. She has been an advocate for hunger, and particularly nutrition, for some time. “It is so essential that we educate Americans on what nutrients the body needs to function at its best. When people are malnourished or deprived of sufficient portions of food, society suffers as a whole. We are talking about a critical component to the welfare of society for which more drastic and sustainable actions are required,” she said.

Laufer-Rottman spent 30 years working for the United Nations World Food Programme helping feed millions of people. “I find it unacceptable that people are hungry anywhere in the world, but moreso in a country like America where we produce more than enough food to feed the entire population,” she says.

“Faces of Hunger in America” is using viral techniques and social media marketing, via Facebook and Twitter (@facesofhunger), to attract additional participants to register on their website: http://www.facesofhunger.org.
