Tummy Tuck- Aftercare and precautions to be followed for the best outcomes

Tummy tuck surgery is the ideal option for achieving a slimmer, tauter tummy and the outcomes of this procedure can be greatly improved by following certain precautions

Oct. 20, 2009 - PRLog -- Tummy Tuck, also known as Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure used to flatten the abdominal wall or stomach area. The surgery is extremely helpful in removing large amount of skin and fat from the middle and lower part of the abdomen.

The procedure removes excessive hanging skin, and repairs loose or stretched muscle, thereby, improving abdominal wall tone and structure. Skin that contains stretch marks on the lower abdomen may be removed as well.

One generally has a lot of pain and discomfort immediately following the operation. One may also experience numbness, bruising and overall tiredness for the next few days.

It is very important to follow the surgeon’s advice religiously for achieving the best results after the tummy tuck surgery. The important precautions to be taken care of after the tummy tuck procedure are:

•   For the first 2 days while resting and relaxing in bed, the surgeon may advise to bend the legs at the hips to reduce strain on the abdominal wall muscles.
•   Within the first week the drainage tubes put in during surgery, to prevent fluids from accumulating are removed. A support garment is given which is to be worn for next 3-4 weeks. The garment helps to control the swelling, support the newly shaped abdomen, and aids healing. It is very important that one wears the garment as long as the doctor advises.
•   Most surgeons suggest that one should not bathe for at least two to three days following an abdominoplasty. One should use the shower rather than bathing in a tub, as sitting in standing water of a bath tub or hot tub could lead to infection. Also, it is advisable to take someone’s help while taking the shower for the first time, to prevent any accidents.
•   One should regularly take the antibiotics and pain medication prescribed by the surgeon to avoid any complications.
•   Exercises that work the abdominal muscles should be avoided for at least three months. Low impact exercise can be resumed within 2-3 weeks. High impact exercise should be avoided for at least 6-8 weeks.

Once these precautions are taken care of, one can expect excellent outcomes from the procedure and can achieve a slimmer, tauter tummy.
