Could Meditation Help Prevent Swine Flu?

Meditation vs. Flu Virus: An Ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
 
Oct. 23, 2009 - PRLog -- Amongst all the recent concern generated by the WHO ( World Health Organization) recent statement that “the H1N1 influenza virus pandemic is still some cause for concern due to its unpredictable nature”, we can take some comfort in the promising results of some research into a more empowering approach at disease prevention.

In a 2003 study at the University of Wisconsin and Harvard University performed an eight week study where employees were given training in mindfulness meditation and encouraged to meditate for 1 hour per day. At the end of the eight weeks, both a control group and the meditating group were given a flu vaccination.

During tests conducted four months after the vaccinations the meditating group was shown to have reproduced significantly more flu virus antibodies than the control group which did not meditate. Although when the study which was published in the online Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine was scrutinized by British expert who stated that the results were interesting, but needed they further study.

Another study based on qigong meditative states, found that the level of T cells in HIV-infected individuals significantly increased with consistent practice of qigong. The same study also found that significantly lowered depression and anxiety, which are both known immune-system depressors, were also a result.
