Follow on Google News | To Write Or Not To Write ? This Is The Question.Earlier in the history, when a new book came on to the market, in some countries, people used to queue to buy the book. Now, with 13,5 million books in English alone, TV and the Internet, the books are in the queue for readers.
By: Askin Ozcan But, there are thirteen and a half million books in English alone and TV and Internet are serious competitors to books. Even the most interesting books get lost in the modern jungle of "literature" Publishing companies are divided primarily into two groups : One, which print books by offset and distribute them to the bookstores via whoesalers, "on credit". As the books are sold, bookstores pay the wholesalers and they, in return, pay the publishers and publishers pay the authors' royalties. These publishers accept about 1 manuscript in 2000 and usually via literary agents. The competition is tough and only the books which would be accepted by the market are published this way. The result is, "average quality" books flood the market, to ensure sufficient sales, so the publishers don't go bankrupt. Others, "the self publishing" companies, print the books by "digital print" and they too, distribute the books by the same book - wholesalers, but as they do not accept to sell on credit to the bookstores, but only on cash basis, books do not reach the bookstores, but are only sold on-line, in the internet bookshops such as amazon.com and the like. One advantage of this latter system is that it eliminates the necessity of having storage for the books - a big expense for both the publishers and the wholesalers. As the books are sold, publishers fill up the stocks quickly by means of digitally printed books. This system is called P.O.D. (Print-On-Demand) Many "self publishing" companies boast of increased earnings as many "offset" publishing houses get bankrupt or feel the "squeeze" in the market. "Self publishing" companies often charge the authors a sum of money to share the expenses of printing and distribution and it is easier for the authors to bring their books on to the market by them.According to one source, "self publishing" companies accept about 20% of the manuscripts submitted to them. They publish the books faster (within some months) as against the offset companies which take longer time to publish the books (from one to two years). When it comes to selling, "bookstores" One can gaze at many titles, looking at the books in his hand, reading a few pages, studying its context and finally deciding to buy or not to buy the book. "On-line" bookshops such as www.amazon.com, www.bn.com, www.adlibris.com, www.infibeam/ in their number too and their services compete very well with those of the "Brick-and-stone" bookstores. Besides, one can search for a book in the comfort of his home, via his computer. /// Books of Askin Ozcan are sold on 200 internet bookshops such as those named above.
