Sculptures made for LED illumination

Nov. 13, 2009 - PRLog -- When sculptor Alber De Matteis was commissioned to create a three-dimensional symbol for the upscale Riverpoint Marketplace this year, its management wanted something at once symbolic of two rivers that run through West Sacramento and “reaching for the stars” attitude of the Marketplace, its stores and the people who shop there.  Management wanted something that would be visible to vehicular traffic on adjacent U.S. Interstate Route 80, other roadways, and something that would create “buzz.”

Sculptor De Matteis immediately thought light.  “Light, whether natural or manmade, is what enables us to see anything.”

Mr. De Matteis selected high-brightness three-color color-changing LED (light-emitting diode) illumination from among the many possible choices.  LEDs consume exceptionally low watts, conserving energy that is especially costly in California. They can last longer than any other light source other than the sun. They require little or no routine maintenance, a cost consideration for the sculpture’s owners, Riverpoint Marketplace.

De Matteis made the twin sculptures from textured stainless steel with a constant top-to-bottom three-dimensional horizontal pattern.  Irregular bronze plates cover the inside and outside vertical surfaces of side-by-side 26-foot high sculptures tapered into compound curves.

ALLSCAPE, the manufacturer of architectural landscape and outdoor lighting products, a Philips Group brand was selected to provide lighting design services and fixtures for the project.

ALLSCAPE employed its award-winning new SL-29 Trio aimable in-ground RGB LED light fixtures.  Three individually adjustable circular LED units are inside each in-ground rectangular housing.  Housings are made of lightweight corrosion-resistant composite material.

Three 25-watt LED units are inside each light fixture, programmed in this case to mix and change colors by sequence for a compelling aesthetical effect.  Each LED light engine rotates 360° and tilts up to 15°.  The housing, as if to compliment the De Matteis sculptures, uses bronze rings to secure each external lens.

The fixture lenses are ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant and compression sealed against water, insect or debris infiltration.  The fixtures are IP65 and IP67 rated, ETL and cETL wet-location, CE listed and made in the USA
