As quarterback of the Idaho Vandals when the Vandals were in the Big Sky Conference, John Friesz started as quarterback for 3 Idaho Vandal football seasons. The #17, worn by Friesz has officially been retired by the University, and John Friesz was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Indiana, in 2006. The Vandals MVP award, given to the team's top player, is named after Friesz. John Friesz also won the prestigious Walter Payton Award, given to the nation's top player in Division 1-AA Football.
