Dec. 1, 2009 - PRLog -- Marketing jobs have been fewer and far between over 2009, a recent report from The Nielsen Company suggests. In the bigger picture, from September 2007 to June 2009, the volume of jobs advertised has taken a drop of almost 50%, with sectors such as construction, sales and computing taking the biggest dip. Between July 2008 and June 2009, the number of advertising and marketing jobs has decreased by 37%, with the only growth area being medical/hospital. However, despite this slow start to the year, recent months have seen a positive change to the situation.

Specialist Marketing Recruitment agency Brand Recruitment experienced a drop in the number of roles during autumn 2008, but this trend leveled off over late summer 2009, with the agency experiencing a surge in roles over late October and thus far in November. This encouraging trend echoes a landmark flagged up by Nielsen in another report which cites three major UK retail chains that have followed four quarters of negative growth with two quarters of positive growth.

Along with an upsurge in PR and marketing jobs, the marketing recruiters have also noted a lower proportion of newly registered candidates being subject to redundancy. “In the early months of 2008, just over one in ten candidates were registering as a result of being made redundant. By the end of that year,  this proportion had increased to 34%,” states Steve Mann, Managing Director of Brand, “This level remained more or less the same throughout the first part of 2009, but seemed to start to decline over the late summer. We are currently working on a salary review for marketing positions and are waiting for the final figures, but a glance at the stats would imply that over the last month or so we have seen the percentage of candidates suffering redundancy drop to just below 20%. This combined with the upsurge in jobs – both in the general economy as well as in the marketing sector – gives us some hope for a great start to 2010.”
