Follow on Google News | Patent Granted on GenerOs EX, A Medical Device That Helps Bones GrowThe GenerOs EX can help lengthen long bones in the arms and legs in order to correct limb deformities, repair traumatic injuries and increase height. Because the device is completely internal, patients can remain mobile while growing new bone.
By: Anne Duncan Distraction osteogenesis is a surgical procedure that works with the body’s own natural healing process to promote healthy bone growth. During the procedure, the affected bone is surgically cut into two segments, and the GenerOs EX device is affixed to the bone. The bone segments are gradually moved apart during the distraction phase, allowing new bone to form in the gap as the body heals. On average, the bone will grow at a rate of one millimeter per day, or about an inch per month. After the desired length is achieved, the bone will consolidate and strengthen. According to Dr. Robinson, “Growing bones may sound like magic, but surgeons have been using the principles of osteogenesis since the early 1900s. Until recently, however, the process required the use of awkward external frames and screws to fixate the limb while the bone grew, subjecting patients to a high risk of infection, significant scarring, pain, and the need to remain off their feet for months at a time. The GenerOs EX is a real advancement in distraction osteogenesis. Because the GenerOs EX uses a completely internal fixation system to support the growing bone, patients can continue walking while healing, with less risk for infection or other complications. That means a smoother, more comfortable recovery for patients.” The GenerOs EX can be used to help correct congenital limb deformities, repair bone deficiencies caused by injury, and even lengthen bones in order to increase a patient’s height for cosmetic reasons. “Differences in leg length are fairly common, with one in every thousand people suffering from congenital deficiencies that are too significant to correct by wearing internal shoe lifts,” Dr. Robinson says. “Limb length inequalities can also develop as a result of injury, bone disease, or infection. Whatever the cause, these imbalances can affect gait and lead to future problems with back, hip and joint pain.” In addition to inventing the GenerOs EX limb lengthener for long bones, Dr. Robinson also holds patents on two other internal osteogenesis distraction devices. The GenerOs SB small bone generator promotes bone growth in the small bones of the hands, wrists, feet, ankles and pediatric forearms, while the GenerOs CF craniofacial bone generator can help repair deficiencies and deformities in the skull, face and jaws. All three devices are manufactured by OrthoNetx, Inc., which is located in Torrance, CA. About Randolph C. Robinson, M.D., D.D.S.
