Drinking and driving is not the way to start off the new year or end the old one. A driver should be designated before the first drink. Keep in mind that driving with a buzz is drunk driving.   Public transportation is a great option. New Jersey Transit runs trains out of Middletown and Red Bank and both stations are conveniently close to the Comfort Inn. New Jersey Transit also has a bus stop located right in front of the hotel on the corner of Route 35 and Woodland Drive. Knowing the effects of the drinks you are serving or consuming is important as well. Remember that beer and wine are just as intoxicating as hard liquor. A 12-ounce beer, a 5-ounce glass of wine, a 12-ounce wine cooler and a shot and a half of liquor all contain the same amount of alcohol.  Mixers do not help dilute the alcohol. In fact carbonated mixers cause alcohol to be absorbed more quickly and sweet mixers mask the taste and can cause people to consume more drinks than they normally would.  

Now is a good time to check the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. If you are hosting a party make sure you do this a few days before the big day to ensure you have time.   Don’t leave candles or open flames unattended or in areas with children and/or pets.  Large crowds and noise can easily scare pets. Make efforts to desensitize them to noises and make sure their ID tags are on and up to date.
