Jan. 7, 2010 - PRLog -- According to a recent article, Louisiana residents have been known as being among the nation’s fattest, least active, most frequent smokers and drinkers and most likely to suffer or die from heart disease, cancer or stroke. Infant mortality has also consistently been a lousy indicator in Louisiana. And with the state’s most recent climb from 49th to 47th in the latest version of a leading annual assessment of general health status and outcomes around the country, there’s still plenty of room for improvement.

Donyel Bocage, colonic practitioner and office manager at Halo Med and Wellness Spa, has spent the last few years attempting to aid that improvement. She’s helping men and women improve their wellness and make healthier lifestyle choices through the newly opened spa.

“For people struggling with weight-loss or illness, especially in Louisiana, finding the balance between discipline and freedom is key.” To find this balance, Bocage recommends the following tips:

Just Move - Our bodies were designed to move and be active. And doing this consistently brings you closer to your natural state, which is fitness. If you’re not into the gym, here are some other options: Vacuum the floor, dance, rake leaves, go for a walk, ride your bike, kayak…the ideas are endless. The more you move every day, especially outdoors in the fresh air, the better you’re going to feel.

Limit Red Meat - There’s a reason why people in the Mediterranean are known as one of the healthiest people on the planet including lower rates of obesity and heart disease. Their secret is that they limit the intake of red meat including beef. You can drastically improve your diet simply by cutting out red meat entirely, or at least limiting it to a few times per month and eating fish or chicken instead that’s baked, roasted or broiled, not fried.

Drink Water First - Our bodies are made up of nearly 70% water and the minerals in water are needed for healthy body function. What’s more is that many people think they’re hungry when really they’re only dehydrated. Drinking enough water every day will help cut down on the extra calories you get from snacking and help regulate our body’s natural processes.

Try Cleansing - Cleansing is a treatment in which we rid the body of accumulated harmful substances that exert a negative effect on individual health. Many of these toxins come from the diet, drug use, and environmental exposure and may slow down the body’s ability to lose weight or fight illness. Cleansing diets (also called detox diets) allow us to fast from some of the normal foods we eat and focus on fresh fruit and vegetables (often in juice form). This process enables us to clear, neutralize, or transform toxins, as well as clear out congestion from the body. A more direct way to cleanse is via colonic hydrotherapy also called colonics. A colonic is a painless procedure that uses filtered water to flush and cleanse the colon of bacteria, impactions, and other matter that naturally builds up over time.

As with all of these recommendations, seek the advice of a professional or medical practitioner before proceeding.
