Home Care Company Warns That Not All Green Options are the Best Choice When it Comes to Saving $$

Brightleaf Customer Care Says Fix Your ‘Loose’ House Before Spending Thousands on Expensive “Energy-efficient” Alternatives
By: Suzanne Magnus

Jan. 13, 2010 - PRLog -- Being energy efficient and saving on waste is always a good thing, especially when not doing so affects our pockets in a market like this one.  And, we’ve all seen the famous personalities voicing the benefits of using all sorts of green products from higher energy efficient windows to better heating and cooling systems to the benefits of wind and solar power for our homes.  The stimulus package has been great in making those efforts more affordable and achievable for many Americans by offering one third back (up to $1,500) on many different energy upgrades.

However, on many homes, whether built in the last ten years or especially older ones, these upgrades are very expensive (even with one third savings) and often they won’t deliver the return on investment alluded to, according to Shane Malloy of Brightleaf Customer Care, a Cary-based company that provides turnkey home inspection and maintenance services to clients.

“For most of us, one third of the energy used for heating and cooling is lost due to a ‘drafty’ home,” said Malloy.  “By ‘tightening’ your home and sealing air leaks, you can significantly reduce your energy costs. In fact, the average cost to seal leaks in a loose house is less than the cost of just one replacement window”.

Some of the common sources of air leaks (from EnergyStar’s website) are diagrammed below. A simple tube of caulk or spray foam insulation to seal these leaks can save you a substantial amount of money on your energy bill. If you are a ‘Do It Yourselfer’, these products can be found at your local hardware store.
