Great America HD Hugh Downs Scam and Identity Theft Series

Jan. 21, 2010 - PRLog -- This new series, hosted by Hugh Downs will focus on scams and scammers involved with identity theft.  Special Agent Barbara Moser of the FBI stated in one of Great America’s segment interviews, “Identity theft in America is considered to be a huge problem.  In the 1990’s it was the fastest growing crime in the United States with losses estimated in the millions of dollars.  Today we consider it to be a very significant pervasive type of white collar crime activity and we estimate losses into the billions of dollars.”  

The Executive Producer stated “This is no small issue when 9 million people a year are victims of identity theft.  Consumers need solid educational information on how to fight identity fraud and how not to become a victim.”  Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personally identifying information, like your name, Social Security number, or credit card number, without your permission, to commit fraud or other crimes.  The crime takes many forms. Identity thieves may rent an apartment, obtain a credit card, or establish a telephone account in your name. You may not find out about the theft until you review your credit report or a credit card statement and notice charges you didn’t make — or until you’re contacted by a debt collector.  FBI Agent Moser also stated, “The Federal Trade Commission stated that about 9 million people a year are affected by identity theft crimes.”  Because identity theft is so serious, Great America has dedicated an entire series of segments to deal with the issue from an educational point of view.  Hopefully the series will help identity theft victims to resolve their problems quickly and aid others to take the necessary precautions that will enable them to remain free from being a victim.  

In this series, Great America will be covering important information that consumers need to know about in order to protect themselves from scams of all kinds.
