Vitronic Optimises Hub with Volume-Measuring Technology

Jan. 27, 2010 - PRLog -- Azkar, one of Spain’s leading logistics providers, is using Vitronic’s VIPAC D1 system to measure parcel volume at its new distribution centre in Constanti, Tarragona. The technology allows Azkar to automate invoicing, verify package data provided by customers, and optimise transit space in delivery vehicles.

Established in 1933, Azkar offers a wide range of delivery services and boasts an annual turnover of nearly €400m. It operates out of 44 distribution centres, which distribute parcels to customers living in their local areas. Azkar has a fleet of some 2,400 vehicles and employs over 5,000 people.

Goods arrive at Azkar’s Constanti site in vans and lorries. Workers unload the vehicles, and place parcels on a conveyor that feeds the hub’s sorting system. Mounted above the conveyor, VIPAC D1 scans items passing underneath using a sensor. It builds a three-dimensional image of each, and measures height, width and length.

Using this acquired data; VIPAC D1 calculates a parcel’s volume and the smallest cube that will enclose it. The conveyor runs at speeds of up to 1.2 metres per second, enabling the system to process up to 2500 object per hour. VIPAC D1 stores all volume data for future interrogation. Operators can print statistical reports and analyses on demand.

VIPAC D1 is certified to provide accurate volume measurements and meets the requirements of the European Measuring Instruments Directive. This means Azkar can produce legally binding invoices automatically and verify customer provided package data, as well as load transit vehicles efficiently.
